JK - When 'chopping' - please don't discard. I'd like to see either an archive of L&BP&I, or receive an email of the saved page prior to amputation. --(signed) Pack Rat

JK
I save everything. Probably won't make an archive of LnB, but I'll send it to you. You could also just save the page right now. That's all I do to archive. I save the page onto the hard drive, and then I delete. I used to cut and paste. What a terrible idea that was as the pages are too long for one cut and paste.

Jerry
As an informal survey since I've now posted for players, where did each of you hear of our online game? ...and I'm not talking to you formerly local guys, I know where you came from and wish I could forget!.....well not really.

Todd
For geneaology, my Dad has traced portions of his side of the family back to the 1200's. On a sorta incidental note. When I was in Groton, Connecticut, I befriended a Navy family after I had gotten out. 3 months into visiting this family, we basically discovered that we were related thru the Fuller family. Then while we were discussing this with the mothers' father, he gets a call from a guy that's doing research on the fullers. My dad had researched that our family thru the fullers, had been brought to the shores of the America's by 5 fuller brothers. As it turned out, this guy that had called, had researched 3 of the 5 brothers, and was coming down the 4th brothers tree, which is how my family ties in, to the family I was introduced to. For the game, I think I found it thru aol, but am not sure.

Jerry
Everyone brag on JK and embarrass him good for his nice work on the new colors and sidebar for the Games Page. It's looks great JK!

Thoth
A pale figure in robes of the blackest night enters the room. Looks around , looks a bit confused and says, " Oops, wrong room." He then exits quickly.

Jerry
You know. i don't remember how I became a Woldian. It may have been AOLs RPG boards, but for some reason I don't think so, But those are the only ones i ever read so......

JK
A contest: Make logos for the games and one for the Wold in general to head up the pages and put out front. Email them to me and someday I'll put up a page of test logos. Then everybody can vote on the ones that they like best, and we'll see if we can't hook up the winners' characters with some xp or treasure or some such... and I suppose you saw my samples on the way in.

JK
And I know some of you have other games you play in or run. Send me the urls of any sites you like or run, and I'll see about putting them on the links page.

Kris
Pretty colors, JK! On an unrelated subject, every time I post I don't see any changes for a couple days. Then finally there's a boatload of posts that came after mine and are waiting for me to respond. At least, that's what I think is happening. I'm gonna see if viewing the page on Internet Explorer allows me more up to date linkage, but does anybody else have this problem? It's the main reason I don't post every day anymore.

Kris
Hit to have Internet Explorer update the page immediately.

JK
are you using the aol web browser? you need to force it reload the page. I put how to do so with netscape and explorer at the top of each page. I don't remember how to do it with aol.

Todd AOL's browser is IE, so it should work in the same manner.

Jerry Kris, both IE and Netscape work fine with the page. Just follow the instructions at the top to renew the page after posting. AOL does not renew the page until the page completely loads from scratch again which is set by your preferences. I don't know if you can tell it to load each time or not. The default is either every 2 or 3 days, I think. Do not use AOL's browser with the Games page. Use IE or Netscape.

Jerry Thanks to JK for updating the Games Page. Note that by joining AOL Hometown we've obtained an extra 4MB of memory. Note the new urls. I expect that the old urls will be removed with time.

Jerry We've received over a dozen inquiries concerning our expansion Game 4. Only one committment so far, but at least 10 are seriously interested. So things are going well in that aspect. We have one also signed up for Game 5. Consider playing in that game. It will have a major role to play in the coming months and years in The Wold. (See advertisement below)

Advertisement How many of you have said at one time or another: "Ah to be young again!" Well Game 5: Aisildur is your chance to make that dream come true. Game 5 will begin with 0 level characters that are 11 years of age, exploring the last months and days before The Joining when all citizens of Ailsildur are implanted with Heartseeds and become One with Ga'al. . . So come join us in Game 5. Wontcha come? Your inner child is calling you!

JK blast. stupid banners. I'll get rid of it (and keep the extra space). Don't worry about that hometown url thing. the old ones will keep working. curses. death. drek. muckmuck.

Kevin My Inner Child ? Jerry are you a new age guru now?

DEH Todd, the 1200's you say? Would you do me a favor and ask him what sources he used to go back that far? Written records from the middle ages are few and far between. I'd really appreciate it. We have no idea how to break past where we currently are stuck.

Todd Sure, I'll ask him. I know one of his major sources was the Mormons. The Mormons in our local area have something like a 20 CD set of geneology stuff. But will let you know.

Kim Just got back from Walla Walla, Washington (for the Kenoyer family reunion), and learned about Chief Peo-Peo-Mox-Mox, respected leader of the Walla Walla ('many waters') tribe in the middle of the last century. Earlier, Merriwether Lewis met a predecessor of PPMM, and referred to the friendly 'Wollahwollah' tribe in his journal.

Jerry I love that name. It rolls off the tongue. I wonder what the name means in their language?

Jerry Every once in a while I like to throw some tidbits out there and see if anyone bites on them. We have some locations that were visited in the last set of adventures that could be detailed. Doing this increases the chance that some DM in the future will want to pull it out and use the location again. So here are some locations that could be mapped and detailed. I'll offer some token experience for them or some token gold for helping out depending on how useful the work is.

Jerry The Game 1 areas of interest would be the castle of the Duke, whatever his name was. This could become a site for a future grand battle or a home for an adventuring group sometime down the road. Yes, I suppose groups could share a dukedom. That would be interesting. The other location would be the Dragon's Hideout. It could be used for the same purposes. It would also be a good site for an outside attack or a place a group would have to sneak in to. So anyone in Game 1 interested in detailing these two locations let me know.

Jerry Game 2 has Parnoth's Castle. It has the tavern in Treetown where you met Joe and Grey. Someone who has a campaign folder could draw a more detailed map of the Emerald Kingdom itself including Emerald City, the River, and Tree City along with the three towns shown on the Bad Lands map.

Jerry Oops that was Game 3. Game 2 could detail the island where the Trogs live along with some more details about the river leading to it detailing such necessities as where they get food, nearby enemies and friends, etc. I can give some information there that I thought on in that regards.

DEH Thanks Todd. I would be most grateful to know the sources.

Kim Kent - did you send a map of Game 2's 'sea devils vs Sentinal' action to folks? I didn't get one. If you (or one of our fellow Winhorn Hamleteers) could email it to me (BillTFind@holtmail.com), I'd be grateful.

Kim No, no, not 'holtmail'. BillTFind@hotmail.com

JK Not it

Todd Hmm, seems I had thing a little mixed on the geaneology stuff. Our records only go back to the 1400's. But my dad said to look for a Mormon family records place. That's where he found the records he has, and he say that you should be able to look for free.

Todd Kim, if you still need the file, and have icq, check and see if I'm around at 803726. I'm connected most days, but between work (11pm-7am), classes (11am-12:30pm), and currently helping to set up for fireworks (anytime left over), I cannot say when you might catch me! :)

DEH Thanks Todd, I'll check it out. I will be acquiring all of my late grandmother's records soon. I intend to continue her work. She visited Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and France in search of grave stones - and she found many. I anticiapte quite an adventure... BTW, 1400's is STILL way back there. Past that very rarely can you find records other than for royalty or famous people - especially in Europe.

Todd When I was in Vienna, we visited one of the mass graves under one of the churches, from the time of the black plague. They do not know who's buried in there, other than to say it was some 5000 people or so.

Kim Jerry - I'm willing to take a shot at mapping the Trogs area & river, etc. for Wold 2. Let me know what info you can provide to help me get started. -Kim

DEH Events such as the plague as well as illiteracy in the 'common' people are the primary reasons for the trouble. It's tough. Now, do you know where this nursery rhyme came from: Ring around the rosey, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down. - Answer the black plague. I can't remember the first part but the second is when they died to help with the smell they put posies in their pockets - then they burned them. And we sing it to our kids without thinking... :) Good Day!

Kris I think 'ring around the rosy' refers to the symptoms of the Plague. Some sort of hives or something.

Kent Kim everytime I send anything to BillTFind@hotmail.com, it comes back as Subj: Mailer-Daemon. Returned mail: Host unknown (Name server: hotmail: host not found)

Kim Kent - So, Hotmail is being cranky again, eh? MSN has been experiencing known problems with it intermittently. Too popular, because it's free. If you also send to hkimm@idt.net, then I'll get it one way or the other. BillTFind@hotmail.com works for me ~98% of the time when I send stuff to it from other accounts, but I've gotten the message you got once. Also, you can use my work address: kim.mccoy@ci.seattle.wa.us ... While we're at it, I'll give you my SSN, height, weight, and favorite color :-)

Kim David - Whenever I sing 'Ring around the rosie,' I am actually thinking. For the record.

Kim Kent - I have received various emails from you, including "Re: Welcome Clay to The Wold" just now. So, sometimes it works! Okay, it's somebody else's turn to enter something here.

JK Speaking of the plague, I was reading some Chinese propaganda from the days of Mao yesterday which referred to Eisenhower as the "God of Plague." I thought that was pretty funny for some unknown reason.

Kim Hmmm -- I would've thought he would be known as the 'god of divets.'

Kris Asian languages seem to have a vitality that makes translation amusing. 'Newsradio' had a re-run where the corporate owner has his biography, which didn't sell well in US, but DID sell well in Japan, translated into English FROM the Japanese version. As a result, 'Jimmy James: Corporate Lion-tamer' became 'Jimmy James: Company Donkey Man'. His new bio bore such new and interesting passages impossible to tell from where they were translated: 'Jimmy James will tame the donkey! Donkey! Donkey! Donkey! Go Donkey!'. And other fascinating expression twists. By the way, JK, reloading the page seems to work great so far.

Kim Several years ago some Americans were visiting Japan. They wanted to see a Japanese movie, to get a taste of their cinematography. They told their interpreter/guide of said desire. He informed them that the local theater was running a show called 'Violinist on the Ceiling.' Delighted to hear of such an apparently avant-garde film, they bought tickets and sat down to watch -- Fiddler on the Roof.

Kim And in San Francisco's Chinatown some time ago, I witnessed a sign posted in a souvenir shop, "Shoplifters will be executed to the full extent of the law."

Kent and there is something wrong with executing shoplifters??

Jerry I have another "task" that could be done by someone (perhaps Kim) With all the new players entering the game, it would be helpful to have a "legend" of The Red Wyrm Inn that describes what has been learned so far: NPC's, stairs up and down, The Maw. That kind of thing. Any takers?

Jerry I have a task that someone could do if they're interested. With all our new players about to come into The Red Wyrm Inn, a legend about the place is in order explaining what's there, famous drinks, NPC's, stairs up to the rooms, The Maw, etc. Any takers?

Kim Idea for Red Wyrm Inn background: Decades ago, an adventuring band managed to defeat a Red Dragon. From the wealth of its hoard, they resolved to establish an inn, "By adventurers, for adventurers."

Jerry Kim, I wasn't really looking for a history or a background. It already has that. And your idea is very close to the truth. The inn was first built and owned by The Red Dragons, who were the top of the heap in The Dragon Consotium of adventuring troupes before the Gold Dragons came along. In fact they were the ones who asked "The Company of Wayward Saints" to tryout and become a dragon group. Since then, they've died fighting a beholder in a desert of the Far West. A couple of years later, Orion and The Blue Sapphires, went and found the bodies and had them raised. However, they have not been the same since. Extremely capable, they don't have the same drive to adventure that they did before their deaths, not to mention that the lone survivor of that encounter, a mage known as Fireball, went insane for a time and endured through several extreme changes and personalities as a result. So a new catagory for semi-retired Dragon Consortium Groups was created: The Wyrm groups. Now about the time that the Red Dragons died, their inn burned to the ground in a battle between the Gold Dragons and one of their nemises, The Black Dragons. Burned it remained throughout all of Claudia's reign. Only after Sturtevant became High Lord Mayor and vowed to "bring the adventurer's back to Plateau City" did the inn get rebuilt as a part of the upgrading and remodeling of Adventurer's Square. It was thought that since the Red Dragons had become officially The Red Wyrms, that the name of the rebuilt inn should be changed as well. (Plus this gave us an excuse to make our name different that the infamous chat room on AOL of the same name. No one would have believed that we had that name for a major inn over 15 years ago.)

Jerry I'd love it if you, Kim, would undertake this. You could tell the backgroune that I just posted elaborating on the battle that destroyed it etc. as none of those details are remembered, at least by me. Anthony, Sam, or Kevin might remember something. Then do the important part which describes the NPC's, drinks, and The Maw for the new players. Giving the new players the information they need to use the inn is the purpose for the article. :)

Kim So, Anthony, Sam, Kevin -- let me know what you remember. What glorious or ignominious things did your characters engage in that relates to the destruction of the Inn of the Red Dragons in the battle twixt the Gold and the Black? Details or generalities appreciated. Meanwhile, Jerry or others, do you know of any extant sketches of the Red Wyrm Inn? If so, I can elaborate upon them. If not, I'll call upon the meager architectural skills acquired in Drafting 101 an undisclosed number of years ago, and make something up. Be prepared for questions...

Jan Just thought I'd pop my head round the door to say - that Games Page looks fabulous - nice graphics!!

DEH Hello to all! Just now got enough time to post. Been unburying myself out from under all my emails and voice mails after my long weekend vacation. We had a great time. Hope you all did too. Good afternoon to everyone. The games are really beginning to get interesting... :)

Jerry One of the reasons I felt I could destroy the thing when I did was the fact that I hadn't mapped the place yet. I started several times, but wasn't satisfied. The place resembles a castle. The bar is circular and in the central portion of the main floor. The Maw on the right end of thing surrounded by grandstands that will hold 200 people. The 5-star restarant is in the western end of the floor. The place is 8 stories high with the top story being a penthouse type thing. The other floors are rooms. The next to the top reserved for staff or visiting minstrels that wish to live there. The whole section under the restaurant is the incredible wine cellar. There should be a couple of stages somewhere one for minstrels and one for dancers and performers which has walkways extending out into the tavern. These walkways are only one step up from the floor so that don't impede the movement of the customers. At the front is the cloakroom and a stairs up. The desk to check our cloak and weapons, if that is desired, or to get a peacebond, if that is desired is on the right side of the cloakroom with the stairs and a small waiting area to wait for friends to arrive before entering on the left. There is also a grand staircase curving up and to the left in the back of the tavern area. Another equally grand staircase curves down and to the left. Underground, there are several meeting rooms for those who wish extreme privacy, some of which are even hidden from view by secret doors. A walkways lead in several directions. One goes to the Catecombs, a second to Finlon Vod's Party House. A third to Star Tower. A fourth south to the thieves Guild. This one is guarded in everchanging ways by the thieves. A final one heads under Adventurer's Square to Red Wyrm Castle. It has a red gate preventing access. Some of these longer passages should have smaller taverns along the way for other meeting places and for those who wish to wet their whistle while traveling the Red Wyrm Entrails. Construction is still going on in several places on this level as the inn is newly rebuilt and some of this level had fallen into great disrepair with collapsing tunnels etc. both from the burning of the Inn and the encroachment from below of The Maw. There's more, but i'ts like secret and stuff so I'll send it to you by email. The place should be grand in size, at least a football field from the north of it (the right wing) to the south of it (the left wing). See the drawing of it on the Plateau City map for the basic shape and location of the place.

Kim Wow. Okay ... I'll see what I can get going. It will probably take me several weeks to do it, though, if you can wait that long.

Donna Greetings & salutations, fellow RPGers! I (the humble player of K'nara Illutu from the Emerald Kingdom game) have FINALLY returned! Imagine my surprise to see that the name of this (geez, I certainly HOPE)out-of-character message board has been dubbed with...that is, the Loot 'n' Booty, one of my more fanciful creations for another AD&D game! Thanx! I'm ablush! 8D (Now...wha'sup???)

jK Jerry, do your fingers hurt?

DEH Good day to all - especially Donna. Good to have you back! In case you don't remember I play Gareth in Game 1 and now Figment in Game 3. Good to have you back in the game. I've always enjoyed your role playing. I hear the weather in the NE is HOT (As I recall your from up there somewhere)! I'm used to it in Texas but in the NE? Wierd things are afoot in the World. Oh well, Good Day! Anyway.

Jerry Yeah, JK, I think they do.

Kim Yeah, Donna. And has Jerry reminded you that K'Nara gets 750 experience points for your having come up with 75% of the name? Maybe, with compounded interest, it will be up to an even higher amount! Welcome back. I'd missed reading of your character's dancing defenses and artful attacks.

Jerry Kim, that will be fine. I've wanted it for years. :) It just never made it to the top of my list of things to develop. Feel free to send me drafts, ideas, etc. Also if any of the rest of you have ideas for the Red Wyrm Inn, let us know.

Kris Hi Donna! Seems like everybody's checking into the Emerald Kingdom lately for a cameo. 'Course it would be even funner if the lifestories of more Gold Dragons were written up! (hint, hint)

DEH Good Friday morning! Got here at 5:00 AM and get to leave a 1 PM. Fine by me! JK, I discovered a typo on the 'Games" page. In the Game 1 description the 4th word on line 2 should be "known" instead of "know", I think. I hate to present even the slightest hint of criticism as the page remake is exptremely impressive - but I thought you'd like to know. Good day to everyone and a great weekend too.

Jerry Kris, I echo that hint. I've always had the players of those characters write their own legend or commission it to be written by another, but it's hard sometimes to get them to do it. However, since it seems we will be returning to some of those characters in the local game now that we have 4 of those players in the group again, perhaps I can encourage more of them to get theirs done. :)

JK bye bye all. I've got to take a little break for a while as I catch back up with real life. I'll be back before too long.

Donna ::waves toodle-loo to JK:: see ya soon! 8) Meanwhile, back at the ranch...I'd been wondering if it was merely *my* perception, or had Game 3 been getting crowded lately, eh? ;D Still, more stuff about all the Golden Dragons is DEFINITELY welcome!

DEH Good afternoon to all! Hope you all had a great weekend. I sure did. My oldest son is now my brother in Christ! He was baptised Sunday - by me (and I had this idea that I could keep my composure...hah!). Guess I'm doing SOMETHING right anyway. Got to see my mother and other family as well. It was good to have them there. Hope your week goes well. Good Day to all!

Kim JK - Enjoy reality. Bill will miss Borbo.

Kim David - good news! As you with your son, I've had the privilege of baptizing each of my three children. Doesn't get much better than that. Congratulations to your son and your family.

JKlinger As I'm sure you've heard elsewhere, it's WONDERFUL to have you back, Donna! No one will take offense to this as I'm sure we all agree: Your turns are wonderfully written and a joy to read and really raise the level of our posts. I knew I needed to start reading Game 3 when I received a copy of your 'Welcome to the Wold', where you talked to -- what was that? -- a head of lettuce? Because carrots are too stuck up?

JKlinger The post about Donna got me thinking. Have any of you written a book, short stories, usw.?

DEH Good morning everyone. Here we are upgrading software on our UNIX server again. It's STILL dark outside! Guess I'll get to go home early and miss the traffic. Good Day to all the mighty adventurers who dare to read this page.

Donna Congratulations, David! And, in regards to ever having been published...alas, no--never professionally. I had a near-miss a few years ago with the august DRAGON magazine, but personal problems intervened and I was never able to get the story hammered out so that they could print it. ::sigh::

Kris Nope! Though I'm starting to consider it. Only thing that I've ever published was a badly edited short module 'The Faerie Dragon's Egg' for The Greyhawk Grimoire online mag.

Hey! August is here! Who else is going to GENCON? Wanna hook up anywhere? A seminar or something? Let me know!

Q
Jul 14, 1999 12:08

Hi, I'm Quincy...one of the newbies of game 4...so...I'm doing as I've been told...and posting here...practicing getting to know all the happy smiling faces that make the Wold the great thing that it is. And that's it...nothing amazingly important to say...that I don't suffer from insanity...I enjoy it...

Kim
Jul 14, 1999 12:11

Love the new look here. Drop down 'jump to' navigation, adding the dice rolls without having to skip over to Irony.com, the flaming dragon ... and more. Well done!

Michael Stanley
Jul 14, 1999 12:23

Hi all, I will be playing in Game 4 as a Mage named Alec Rasksie. Will hopfully get to know you more as the game goes on. Looking forward to getting started. See Ya

Kris
Jul 14, 1999 12:40

Q, what's your email address again? Just wanna make sure you aren't the other Quincy I know--here I thought it was a rare name!

DEH
Jul 14, 1999 13:09

Good day to all! Hope all goes well for you today. Welcome to all those starting game 4. Hope you enjoy the Wold as much as I. Good to see you posting again Donna. I've never been to Gen Con - I'm sure I can't go this year. I'll be in Seattle visiting Kim (just coming back) as Gen Con begins. What's it like? (I figured I could get some milage out of THAT question :)). Good Day!

Justin Chambers
Jul 14, 1999 15:56

Here's my real wold post. I'm a newbie making my debut as a PC in game 4. The character's name is Guardian Solomar. If you see him in the Red Wyrm, go easy on him. He's a bit fragile right now. But here in the loot andf booty, I can take it.

Gniffle
Jul 14, 1999 19:12

i can post here too but not in game 4

Ted Jacobs
Jul 14, 1999 20:39

I have a new chacter in game 4. His name is Trace Jacobs. An Elven Ranger with his dog luke. I have allways been fascinated with the dark ages and anything associated with that time. I look forward to becomeing good friends with ya'll. Oh and by the way I like the new changes to the web sites.

JKlinger
Jul 14, 1999 22:21

To those of you unfortunate few that cannot post into game 4, please send me email describing any error messages you get. Thx.

Jul 15, 1999 00:40

Kris...I have two e-mail addresses...granmastrQ@aol.com and qwindin@aol.com. My name is a pretty rare one...I only know two people that have it.

Kris
Jul 15, 1999 02:00

The other Quincy calls himself The Real Q. I thought for the longest that meant the real question, but turns out his name is Quincy. What's GENCON like? I can't be the only one who's gone! It's 10,000 gamers in one place. Imagine a city where everyone is a gamer and the only people who get made fun of are those heretic card-players.(Save gaming-kill a Magic player) You can sit on bleachers for cattle-call games at any time if you've got nothing better. I love going!

sam
Jul 15, 1999 02:55

ive been to GEN CON too. I even was able to win one of my games i competed in. Its a blast. everyone should go at least once

Jerry
Jul 15, 1999 15:09

I am gearing up to going to Gen Con again next year. I've thought for a couple of years now that it would be cool to go in the year 2000 and then in 2001 for the obvious reasons. I'll never forget playing the RPGA Ravenloft tournament there about 4 years ago. There was a spot in the module where the party was required to scream out loud with horror in their voices at a certain spot about 30 minutes into the module. As each of about 30 groups playing the thing got to that spot, they would scream out and everyone else would scream back. One group didn't get there for 2 and 1/2 hours. Everyone, which was 1000s of gamers in a huge gymnasium just jeered and laughed at them for being so slow. It was a nice tension breaker in a truly horrifying adventure. There are a million stories. I'm sure that everyone who has gone has a dozen. I'd like to hear some from others of you. Or if not con stories, just gaming anecdotes.

Jerry
Jul 15, 1999 15:10

BTW, welcome to all of you new guys and gals. Welcome to the Loot 'n Booty!

Kim
Jul 15, 1999 15:29

Our phone lines went down at home yesterday :-( ... So I went running with my 14-year-old son instead of doing my email / internet things :-) ... The phone company says they won't be out until Friday :-( ... but maybe I can do something else with my kids tonight :-)

Justin Chambers
Jul 16, 1999 16:14

Sam, if you're listening, i've got a beef :) I mean, I know it's only practice, but 15 goblins against 5 1st-level runts is what we call in the business "overwhelming odds." Of course, Guardian Solomar would NEVER complain, I feel (as his alter ego) I must address the situation on his behalf :)

Kris
Jul 16, 1999 16:26

I felt the same way when my first DM ran us against a horde of skeletons. Didn't matter that we won, I didn't like it anyway.

sam
Jul 16, 1999 20:35

dont worry justin, its just pratice, to help you get the rules down(if you received them from jerry, that is). it has no effect on the game that is about to start. our normal combats will be more balanced. for instance, if it was in the adventure we are about to play, it would only be about 6. so dont worry, your not going to be put in an unfair position.

Jerry
Jul 16, 1999 21:16

Me send out the combat rules? Me? I asked you to do that Sam. Grrrr....Ok, I"ll do it. Stamping off.....stamp....stamp.....stamp.....

Justin Chambers
Jul 17, 1999 13:58

Um . . . I didn't mean to 'cause such a rucass. I was just complaining like good PCs do, hehe. Thanks jerry for sending the combat rules. Thanks sam for squelching my fears of being outnumbered. i will, um . . . MAY, never compain again.

Kris
Jul 17, 1999 17:25

Don't do that Justin! Jerry LIKES it when the players complain! Do it a lot!

Todd
Jul 18, 1999 15:40

Hey all. I've never been to Gen Con myself. Had a friend when I was out in Hawaii, that went to Gen Con every year. Wish I could remember his name. Anways, JT, I do not know how much work you want to put into these webpages. But I can tell you that Opera Browswer does not like these pages at all. I get to one page, then it hangs on that page for anything else I try to do. But I have explorer as a back up, since Eudora uses their viewer for html in e-mail. BTW for the new people, I'm Rond in game 2 and soon to be Ari in game 5.

Wow!!!i go away for ten days and the entire Wold has changed. Change IS good, just remember that. everything looks great, even if AOL doesnt particularly like loading it. Ahh GenCon, haven't been since the early eighties, when I ran MY tourney game. :>) As for being published, So far, only a few poems, one article in an early Dragon. However, There is a series I am working on currently, with the aid of my editor, that will be out in the next year or so. The first book and the series will be titled Women's Magic. Yes, the protagonist is a young female and yes i know that I am an old crotchety male, buy hey what the heck.

Who's excited about game 4? (raises his own hand) I am! Here's to not dying in the first fight . . .

Jerry
Jul 19, 1999 14:41

Well, Games 4 and 5 are both up and running. Hoody Hoo! (BTW, Hoody Hoo! is not a Master P the rapper thingee. He stole it from the comic book "Knights of the Dinner Table" which if you're not reading, you're missing the funniest thing to come along since Snarfquest. Many kudoos to John who redesigned the posting pages, to all the new players who put up with me asking for corrections to their character sheets for the jillionth time, to John also for filling in for Kent as DM of Game 2 during his vacation (Welcome Back Kent!), to David Hill for taking over Game 3, and to Anthony for DMing the local game all summer so I had the time to work on this expansion. Selah!

Anyone seen Arlington Road yet? I thought it was the best conspiracy movie I've seen ever. The character development was what made it work. No one-dimensional typical action film characters. Very spooky and thought provoking. I highly recommend it.

DEH
Jul 19, 1999 15:51

SnarfQuest? Wasn't he eaten by the Comic Crudulator?...:) Speaking of movies I saw part of the non-animated Disney's "Jungle Book" Sunday. And who would appear but John Kleese - in a SERIOUS role! It was quite funny to me. Good Day!

Todd, I downloaded Opera and tried it out. I see what is happening, but don't know *why* it's happening. I played a bit, and it seems the page should be loading! My guess is the problem has something to do with Opera's caching scheme. If you want to use Opera with our site now, while I try and figure this out, hit Opera's reload button every time you follow a link (ie. Read Turns, Enter Turn, etc). I'm attempting to post this with Opera, so we'll see if it's doable.

Hmm. Seems I didn't think about hitting the refresh button. I'm also using Netsonic on a test basis to see whether I think it might be worth it. The main thing that is good about netsonic, is that it work with all the browsers, so you can use netsonic to hold all the graphics. It would be interesting to see if Netsonic also intercepts on AOL.

JKlinger
Jul 20, 1999 00:43

Hello, everyone. I just wanted to point out that the Loot 'n Booty placard on the top right of your page has a big blank spot in it. What should we put here? Suggestions? Pass your suggestions or drawings on to me, or post them here. BTW: This is my attempt at the sign which hangs above the doorway to the Inn.

I'm excited about game 4...and as far as the first fight. Well...he who fights then runs away...runs for long...and fight...um...no...that's not right. He who fights and gets good dice rolls...lives to run away another day? No...well...it's something like that. I just want to get out of the first fight alive...my request is simple. That's all I'm asking...

DJ Jerry
Jul 20, 1999 01:43

Ok Folks! I'm happy to announce the opening of our new dance floor here at the Loot 'n Booty. Just grab a partner and hit the Loot 'n Booty icon at the top of this page. Let it load completely. It takes a bit for our bards to get their instruments tuned. Turn up the volume on your speakers and Dance! (I can't wait to ahem see the posts this generates.) Celebrate good times! Come on!

Jerry
Jul 20, 1999 10:58

Some unsolicited advice to Game 4. If you want to get ahead in one of Anthony and Sam's games, concentrate on the creativity and cleverness of your roleplaying posts. Get into the personalities of your characters. Find an "acting" hook for it and in as melodramatic way as you can, roleplay the top out of things. I suggest you read the start and continuing adventures of Game 3. Anthony started this group last year and they still roleplay the top out of things. Note such characters as Shadrach, Ingrge, Olana, and K'nara in Game 3. I also recommend Bill and Borbo in Game 2 who enter the game about half way through the archives of that game. Succeed through imitation!

There is a new airline starting to fly in August. Ticket prices for a round trip to Hawaii will drop from $1000 per person to around $500 per person. Still a bit steep for a casual weekend in Hawaii. I'll bring it up to Tina, but probably not. We are planning our vacation for Nov, though. Tina's getting fairly excited.

The site is VERY nice. Thanks, John, very much! I was checking out the status of the Lord of the Rings movies and I thought I'd drop a couple of URL's for those who might not have seen them yet. The Lord of the Rings movie site (which is very slick and has some nice preview shots that they've thrown together) is at: http://www.lordoftherings.net/main.html A popular info site for the movies is: http://www.xenite.org/faqs/lotr_movie.htm Check out the interviews ("20 questions") with the director, Peter Jackson. Somehow, I think these movies will be more that just "renters".

As some of you know, last week I had problems getting on line. My phones finally work reliably again. In the interim, Someone Else has taken over posting of Sweetie Pie and Franklin. Could You let me know who You are? I'd be happy to pick up on posting for them ... but the last few times when I was about to, that Someone Else had already posted ... You can let me know at BillTFind@hotmail.com. I'm willing to negotiate for their release.

Okay, looking around the boards here, I see that Franklin & Sweetie Pie & Disgruntle, and perhaps others, are spreading about. So, I grant a limited release of Fr. & Sw.Pie to the DMs, with the reserve clause that I can play them, too. So there :P ... and remember, Sweetie Pie is a Nice Girl (and a half elf with strawberry blonde hair, and Loves to Feed People, and is pretty cute).

JK, I'm not sure what it is about posting, but there's something fishy between the posting screen, and what happens afterwards. I'm missing a total of 3 posts. 2 to game 5, and 1 right here. The two to game 5 have been over the last 2 days, and the one to here, should have been before my two test messages. the test message were because I thought it might be something with the blue screen. The message I lost here, I got to the blue screen after posting, and went back on my browser by two, in order to just refresh on the browser, in order to see my post. But when I came back, it wasn't there. Which is what promted me to do the test messages. It may also be something with Netsonic. FOr this post, I made sure that the program was turned off. Will play over the next day or two, and see if I can give you feedback about it.

John - David Hott is in Seattle this week, staying at the Sheraton Hotel. But don't tell anyone, as this may be Top Secret ;). He and his wife Kim had dinner with my wife Jenny and me tonight. It is good to meet face-to-face a fellow Woldian! We're going to see if we can meet together this coming week, too.

Kris
Jul 24, 1999 14:21

I felt the film had some faults but the House was truly inspirational. In the credits they said they used some Castle Haraxton or something in Lincolnshire plus another place plus the Queen Mary. Picking out the neatest bits, I'd say. But without photos or pictures, any game based on it wouldn't have the same impact.

Chris
Jul 24, 1999 20:47

I think it depends entirely on how it was presented... I'm a pretty visual Storyteller/DM, I don't think I'll have a problem conveying the mood, spirit, or beauty of the location.

Jerry
Jul 25, 1999 13:02

Well DEH (David Hott) called me yesterday from Seattle and said he throughly enjoyed getting to meet Kim and his family Friday night. You gentlepersons are the reason we have such a sense of community here. Most of you probably think of me as the guy that sends your character sheet back to you for the 15 jillionth time asking for corrections and I guess I deserve that, but let me say here that I do feel very fortunate to have so many of you decide to join us and add your richness to The Wold. Thanks for playing and staying and making this place such an enjoyable place for me to game and create.

Jerry
Jul 27, 1999 01:12

That would be helpful I'm sure Kim, but I'm not sure our DMs would want their email addresses posted like that for all to see. Care to chime in here DMs? I'll send out a currenct email list soon.

testing
Jul 27, 1999 10:44

Umm i would rather not post it for all to see as then wanderers may mistakenly bombard us with reqest to join the games. Personally i don't have a problem with it but functionally it could be a nightmare.

JKLinger

Well, thanks for that comment, Mr. Testy. :) I wonder which DM that was...slap! slap!

Jerry
Jul 27, 1999 19:54

So like all of you are saying to yourselves, "Self, I wonder what Jerry actually looks like? Does he have horns? Is it true he dates the Lady of Pain in Sigil?" Well find out for yourself. I went Monday morning at 6AM to see my favorite sports talk show host broadcast from Dallas Cowboy Training Camp and they took a picture of the audience (all 7 of us) and posted it on the radio's website. So rush over to www.570klif.com and select the training camp pictures. I'm the one in the blue tee-shirt and the blue cap on the far left of the back row. See me? Doesn't that help? hehe. Better rush over there, it probably won't be up long considering that I'm in the picture. :)

Most of you don't know but the Game 3 people have had the LONGEST argument about their name. We're in the second vote run-off and I'm sick of it. The next person to suggest we change our name again, I shall personally slay!

Kim
Jul 28, 1999 02:11

Posting the DMs' names on the web pages is, if you think about it, a pretty silly idea. It would open up the game masters to frequent unwanted email, spam, rheumatism, IRS audits, etc. Who thought of this, anyway? I say boot 'im off.

Okay you Green Acres wannabees in game 3, here's a couple of possible images and variants for your upper-right and games page icon. Vote for which you want, and let me know. Minor changes are fine, just put your comments in with your vote.

The left two were donated by Lemberno (Thanks), the right two by me. If we use either of the left two, we need to give credit to the picture's original author either on a "credits" page, or the same as I've done the flying dragon (place your cursor over the flying dragon for a couple of seconds and you'll see what I mean).

Thanks Kim, for telling me your browser versions.

"I'm back in the saddle again....". Good Day to all! I see the Wold has survived my week off. Seattle is a wonderful place. My only wish is that I had another 2 or 3 weeks to spend in the area. We saw a few key sites, ate at a few key restaurants, saw a few key people. It was great! Two treats in particular was to meet and dine with Kim, Jenny, and their daughter Shanleigh. They introduced Kim (my Kim...) and I to a great spice tea, Russian culture, cool things to do in Seattle, ongoing missions in the East. It was really a wonderful time. I only wish we had more time. The other treat was to see the newest US aircraft carrier the USS Stennis. It has 4 1/2 acres of deck space and a crew of 6000! They had their full contingent of aircraft on the deck. F-18s, F-14s and some others. I really felt proud when I saw it. We have fire power folks. Too bad it is abused so much (end of political innuendo...). We also saw GreenPeace attempting to spray paint it. They failed. Oh well. Anyway, it's good to be home and see the boys. They were glad to see us but not nearly as glad as we were to see them. They didn't miss us much. They were playing ut at the lake. Hope everyone has a great day.

Donna
Aug 3, 1999 01:55

speaking of Red Wyrm Inn--I've been asked to RP Flueterflam while people are offline and/or on vacation...I was told he was in the RWI (specifically with the band of adventurers in the MAW)...but I don't see any references to him there. I wonder if the AOL pages downtime is related to their current spat with Microsoft? Probably not, but just wondering.

Jerry
Aug 5, 1999 00:00

Welcome back DEH. Did you get any pictures taken when you and Kim met? I've had a pic page that would link from this page in the back of my mind for awhile now. I think it was Anthony's original idea, but I'm not sure. We'd probably put it where the dance floor is now. :) Kim, John said something similar last night about the programming problem being a reacion to their feud with Microsoft. It's an interesting theory. However, it didn't prove to be a permanent change. Just something that had to be fixed. Donna found out a little more about things from a friend of hers who is an AOL tech, but I'll leave it to her to espouse that or not here. By the way, who is Lew? I saw a post from a Lew up there and don't know who that is. It's not a name that has appeared before or has been given to me as a player name. So identify yourself or we'll banish you to dance with the lemmings on the dance floor!

Good day to all! Nice to see my return greeted by a chance to slam AOL! Boy, it doesn't get any better than that! BTW, in an email I said AOL is a good stock to own... Not currently, down 10 points+ today. Oh well, far be it from me to wish someones investment to go down so I'll refrain less the stock gods frown upon MY investments... I'm beginning the process of unburying myself at work. It was a relatively smooth week but STILL it piles up. Guess that's good though, in a sick sort of way. I must apologize that we didn't get any pictures of Kim, Jenny, myself, and Kim. We thought about it at all the wrong times. Sorry. Should have done it. Back to the grindestone for me. Until tomorrow!

(Standard posting problem answer #33) Try clearing your cache, history, and temporary internet files. Make sure you're loading the page fresh and not an old copy from your harddrive. This can be done by setting your preferences so that the page is refreshed each time you boot up the browser. 95% of the problems people have had are solved by doing these simple things. :) Let me know, Chris, if this doesn't do the trick.

You know what? I truly am sick and tired of dieting and exercising. I just want to be the weight that I want to be and stay there. And I am not asking for a miracle either. OK, I'm done whining now. So is AOL done messing with the Wold or are they just taking a break. I think game 3 is very close to deciding on the logo, but you know how that goes ... They are looking forward to it - sort of. I doubt it will be a permanent condition... :). Went to the dentist this morning for my semi-anuual scolding for not flossing enough. No cavities again! Have a great day and we'll visit again tomorrow.

Well, I was just wondering whether there would be any interest in creating either a backup site to post to, when aol gets fussy, or moving to some kind of centralized server. I know at one point there was a place that was offering 25megs of free space. Though I do not know if they allowed cgi, which is what I think you are using. Also, for those that didn't know, there's netzero.com, which is a free U.S isp, as long as you do not mind a banner sized spot on your desktop for advertisements. I have them as a spare backup. Though I'll be going to cable modem thru tci next month, I hope.

I use Geocities/Yahoo myself. Get 11 free megs, tho my pictures take up a lotta that. Well, my post to Aisildur went fine, tho I'm gonna wait on Phyrbie before updating on Game 3. Donna, Fluet's group split up til Marlowe was done identifying stuff. He's due a share of that treasure.

Aug 11, 1999 17:12

Except for two instances in one week, AOL has done fine and been very dependable. There were some problems with the programming of the new pages, but that was to be expected. We were forced into upgrading before we were ready because JK was not around to fool with the old ones and get them working for the expansion games. Plus, 95% of the problems with those were because of browser problems, not programming. John did a very fine job of getting those written from scratch in a new language than he had used before in a very short time. If we did decide to move, it would have to be next summer when I have the time to deal with it.

The AOL site itself has always been OK. It's the blasted software you have to load on your home system that always aggrivates me. It always breaks when they upgrade - without exception. I usually don't say always but I really think it's accurate this time. But this is the first time I've been affected by their server. Guess we better give them the benefit of the doubt. Only one server problem. Of course, this is also the first time I've ever heard Jerry even entertain the idea of moving from AOL in ANY form! Of course, I think that's because he likes to hear me complain about it ... :). Not really. It would be premature to suggest moving to another ISP. AOL has improved. If they continue we'd do well to stay with them - unless we can get a significantly better deal on disk space somewhere else. And there's one other large consideration. AOL is the heaviest hit site in the world by a long shot - like it or not. What better place to showcase the Wold than there? Maybe a TSR site or something. But another generic ISP? I doubt it would be as good for us from that perspective. Let's hold off on moving. Of course, all of the above is just my own opinion. Your's may vary... Good Day to all!

Good day to all! Hope all is well. I will be traveling to Missouri tonight to help my grandfather get ready to move to Texas. He's marrying my widowed great aunt. Interesting... My grandfather is marrying his brothers wife. We had to pick ourselves up off the floor after THAT announcement. Have a great weekend!

Kim
Aug 19, 1999 12:26

David - was your grandfather's brother older than him, or younger? Did his brother's wife bear children to your grandpa's brother? If your grandfather is the younger brother, and his bride-to-be bore no children, then he could be said to be following the levirate law of marriage. References to and instances of are mentioned in Deuteronomy 25:5-10, Genesis 38, Ruth 4:5ff, and in the Sadducees' question regarding it in parallel passages in Matthew 22:24, Mark 12:19, and Luke 20:28. Although unusual in this day and age, for a brother to marry his deceased brother's wife has a sound Biblical basis. Besides that, she doesn't have to change her last name again, or get to know a whole new set of inlaws! ¡Que vivan ellos benditos!

Jerry
Aug 19, 1999 13:00

If I remember right, though, Kim, one of the more graphic scenes in Genesis concerns this practice of the brother marrying the widow of a brother out of loyalty to the brother. I'm at school and don't have access to a bible here, but didn't a relative of Abraham get struck down by God when he purposfully shot his seed on the ground instead of joining with his brother's wife? And didn't she dress up as a harlot or something when he wouldn't take her to wife fooling him into joining with her? ::hehe joining is a Game 5 term. Scary::

Kris
Aug 19, 1999 19:44

I don't recall exactly, but it's from Hebrew law. Has something to do with property as well. Like maybe the brother gets the property and money, and it's to take care of his dead relative's children and wife to marry her.

Kim
Aug 19, 1999 21:12

Jerry & Kris - you're both correct. The referenced Genesis 38 tells the story of Onan. For any bankers among us, this is the first recorded instance of 'substantial penalties for early withdrawal.' [[**Sorry**]]. In a nutshell, Judah (one of 12 sons of Jacob, and great-grandson of Abraham) married Shua's daughter, who bore him three sons over a period of years. #1 son, Er, married Tamar. Er, wicked in the sight of Yahweh, was slain by the LORD. Judah said to #2 son Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother." Well, as you pointed out Jerry, Onan didn't quite follow through with this plan. So, the LORD slew Onan, whose actions were displeasing in His sight. Judah then counseling his daughter-in-law Tamar, "Remain a widow in your father's house, till Shelah my son grows up"-- for he feared that he (son #3) would die, like his brothers. / [Taking deep breath.] / Eventually the mother of Judah's sons died. After his period of mourning, he headed up to the town of Timnah for sheepshearing time. Someone mentioned to Tamar that her father-in-law, Judah, was going there. She took off her widow's garments, dressed real nice, veil included, and posed as a harlot at the gates of a town on the way. Judah was feeling frisky, and negotiated a price with her, not realizing she was his daughter-in-law ... To find out what happens next (very interesting series of events), read chapter 38 of Genesis. Tamar was foxy in more ways than one. / Kris - you'd be referring to Deuteronomy 25:5-10. And, the fourth chapter of Ruth in the Old Testament. The story of Ruth is charming and short - about four pages in the average Bible, and the role of property and brides is nicely illustrated, as the bright Boaz (descendent of Judah & Tamar, by the way, and great grandfather of King David) uses his knowledge of Mosaic law and his people's customs to ensure he can marry the beautiful widow of his relative. By the way, for those in Game 5 - Aisildur, there already have been a number of Biblical allusions (not illusions).

Jerry

Kim, JK, I think, has a copy of those archives. We'll need to add them to what I've removed since he left us and then post them. JK is supposed to be here in Wichita Falls today visiting family and said he'd call me or drop by during our game today. If he does, I'll catch him up on things woldian and we'll work out how to get that stuff online. BTW, Anthony suggested last week that we create shorter "legends" of each archived adventure told in 1st person by one of the characters in that adventure (although it wouldn't have to be written by that character's player) so that new players could read the legends instead of hundreds of pages of history to get the full picture of each games situation. It would serve as a good reminder for us as well. Let me know what you think about this. Also let me know if you're interested in writing any of these legends. I"ll be glad to give you "token" appreciation for doing it in the form of minor expendable magic, gold, and or xp.

If you want to volunteer to help at the site in any way, all you have to do is ask. Anything you do will carry your name on it. We need town maps of certain towns, maps of locations, newly created NPC's, legends, written modules, etc. We can use the whole gamut of help in mulpiple areas. My current list of things to develop has 13 catagories and over 250 items. :) Remember it's good to volunteer. :)

I have a question for those of you familiar with the planescape set (or the planes in 1st edition). Which of the 5 lower planes, Baator (9 Hells), Gehenna, The Grey Waste (Hades), Carceri (Tarterus), or Abyss seems most evil to you, and why. Just a curious question that's been running through my mind.

Kim
Aug 23, 1999 01:54

Well, with work still underway on the Red Wyrm Inn maps (expect first installments in September), I don't think I could do a legend summary right now unless a major benigh artifact were available ;-)

Good Monday morning to all! Kim, my grandfather is the youngest of 5 brothers. He is 19 years old and will be for 4 1/2 more years - really. His oldest brother (husband of the woman my grandfather is marrying) had 2 daughters. In fact only one of his brothers had sons - and they were from different marriages and haven't been heard from in 50 years - they are not nor will ever be (in all likelyhood) part of the family. Nobody knows where they are. So my father is the only "real" heir in the Hott bloodline. I'm not sure the Hebrew law applies. It may because I don't think daughters really counted back then. Hope all is well with everyone. Good Day! Eh?

David, you said, "He is 19 years old and will be for 4 1/2 more years - really" Guess what? He'll turn 20 next year, because, unlike most century marks, those divisible by 400 ARE leap years. So, he has only six months and five days until he turns 20, celebrating once again the anniversary of his 1920 birthdate. And, he'll be old enough to drink on the last day of February, 2004.

DEH
Aug 24, 1999 10:58

You learn something new every day. Oh well, as with every rule there is an exception. So does he qualify for the Hebrew law or not? Somehow I doubt they'll have any kids - barring a miracle of course. However my dad - being the card he is - wasted no time in asking him if he got her pregnant and if he needed any pointers on contemporary birth control... :) Good Day!

Aug 24, 1999 12:49

Kim, I'll scan and send you a map of an inn I drew for the Silver Eel in Lankhmar. It's very large and spruced up. Perhaps it will give you some ideas. I'll send lists of things that need doing to those of you volunteering. That way you can have some choices of the kind of things I have available. It also serves as example of the kinds of things you can do. Perhaps you'll see something on the list that interests you. Perhaps the list will spur your imagination to something you'd like to do not on the list.

JK

All the archives that I had are now posted. For any others, bother Jerry. Kim, I'll be slowly easing back into things. For now, I'll just be playing Nonam in G1. But have no fear, Borbo will one day return. Volunteers? ::chuckle, chuckle::

Kris
Aug 24, 1999 20:35

Most evil, Cameron? But first you have to decide what evil is..Let me think about it another way: what plane would like LEAST to live in? The grey waste where they bore you to death--ho hum. Baator where you live like a communist or boarding school--been there. Gehenna just seems like a big blob of lava to me; nothing much there. The Abyss where nasty people try to hurt and eat you? Maybe. But then there's Carceri where they try to turn you against each other-the prison world.

Kim
Aug 24, 1999 21:11

David - *LOL* - Yes, it sounds as though, at least in a round-about way, that marriage still qualifies under Hebraic law. However, I'm sure that some Talmudic scholars could have an enjoyable field day discussing and debating the details.

Cameron
Aug 24, 1999 23:55

You underestimate them. Baator is much more than a 'communist boarding school' The Dark Eight are there, and it's a world of political intrigue and manouvering(sic?), where you seek to get the best you can within the confines of law. Gehenna is almost like Carceri, but while in Carceri the plane itself tries to get you to betray others, and the petitioners there betrayed for betrayal's sake, in Gehenna it is simply a 'everyone for themselves' mentality. You may aid someone if it furthers your ends, but you'd betray them too. All that matters is your own furtherment. In the Abyss, they are much like limbo, only evil. In Limbo, it is simply senseless, whereas in the Abyss it is senseless violence. Betrayal is the mode, but often cabals will survive simply because they are too afraid to betray each other. The very plane itself seeks suffering in any form. In the Grey Waste, however, it is not simply boring, it is depressing, hopeless, and apathetic. Things don't follow cause and effect (even though they may seem to), they just happen because they have to. No other reason. In Carceri, it is similar to the Abyss only no one is afraid to betray in any way. They lie in such twisted ways that you must discount all that they say. If you look beyond the surface, all are very evil. The question is what is the worst form of evil? Some say the Abyss or Carceri, for sure, but what of the Grey Waste, in which you lose even your individuality? Your sense of self? For adventurers, who strive to be individuals, this is the worst punishment you could have, unless you'd rather not adventure any more. And even then, it's not so nice when you realize that even thought you have no sense of self, you still have a sense of dispair and hopelessness.

I just used the QJ before this post; seems to be working for me. Oh, I recently discovered a good tidbit of info. As some of us have unfortunately discovered, hitting the browser's Refresh button doesn't always reload the page from the web, even if you think you've emptied your cache [ especially those using an ISP we don't need to name ]. I previously told people using Netscape to do Shift-Refresh to force the issue. My new discovery is you can do Ctrl-Refresh in IE to force it. If any of you AOL'ers have a problem again [ like that'll never happen ;) ], try Ctrl-Refresh to see if it works. Later.

JKlinger
Aug 30, 1999 06:41

FYI, for all you AOL users, you aren't limited to the AOL browser. You can download the latest version of Netscape or IE and use those. I used to do it, and I'm pretty sure Jerry does. You just minimize AOL and launch the browser. It'll solve many of your AOL web surfing woes. I recommend trying it.

Good Day To All! Hope all is going well. I was told last night that my fish catching record had been officially broken for our family. Well, sort of anyway. Out on Lake Texoma I caught a 29 1/2", 12 lb 8 oz striper bass last year which was declaired to be the largest fish by far anyone in our extended family had ever caught on that lake. Sunday my father-in-law and his brother pulled in a 36", 40 lb catfish on a jug line - good for them! But as far as the record... It was a different fish, it was caught in a 'passive' manner, AND it was caught by two of them so I think they should divide it by two (sounds fair to me). That's all I can think of right now. Of course, they SAY they took a picture which they have not yet produced... :) Good Day!

Kim

Jerry
Sep 5, 1999 23:35

No one much tells AD&D anecdotes here, but I thought I'd share a couple that have happened to me in the local game recently. My eyes have recently been opened as to the sinister things we DMs to to players that they put up with in the name of fun. Example 1: Anthony has graciously DMed the local game all summer. We've done an adaptation of White Plume Mountain, with Anth adding what I call "Anthony Specials" to the whole thing. He added a bit of Tomb of Horrors to it and it suddenly become more sinister than both. Well, anyway, we hit this room filled with pools and mirrors. Our intrepid band of adventurers by this time carrying a huge death fixation just dives in hoping for ability changing pools as in the old days of roleplaying. While this happens, Scott Marley (aka inventor of Parnoth and a Woldian DM of Master Status [JK and Anth are also that level] gets trapped in a mirror and replaced by his evil self. My beautiful new Mage/Priest who has done so well with 24 hit points at 5/4 level, dies by backstab with one stroke. Anth had let Scott play both his bad and good selves so strictly speaking, Scott killed me. I seethed for about 5 minutes when I broke down laughing as Scott apologized for the 25th time and wouldn't stop feeling like he had betrayed me. End of first story. The next week, we finish this mini-campaign coming up on the Lich. I'm playing Anth's character since I'll begin DMing right after this and see no reason to roll up a character for one battle. Chris who holds one of three artifacts necessary to kill this bad guy, rolls a 1 attacking one of the remaining mirrors in the mirror room and the item rebels. Chris loses the ego check and the artifact disappears. Now we can't kill the bad guy, we can only destroy the box with his bones in it. Immediately the lich appears offering us a way out through a dimension door if we'll but leave him the box. He teleports us to the Astral Plane so there is nothing for us to lay the box on so we can break it. Scott grabs the box and tries to jump through. He slams against the thing not able to leave with the box. Me, now playing Anthony's character, gets two of the others to hold the box against the dimension door and I strike at it putting a crack in it and doing damage to each of us somehow. Combat ensues. Scott gets sucked into the liches teeth which serve as soul receptacles. All of us except Sam die horrible death with the damage that radiates from hitting the box over and over while trying to save vs. the lich's soul attacks. In the end, Sam destroys the box, but all of the rest of us are dead. Anth gets this satisfied look on this face. (This is the part I spoke of earlier when I said I got to experience things from the other side of the DM screen) Sam raises my character (actually Anth's character) with a Scarab of Death. I'm giddy with all of this. I'm all ready to DM a 5-7th level adventure next and it looks like we'll be rolling up new 1st level ones since there are only two party members left alive. If we did continue with the two adding new characters, I have to deal with keeping 2 guys from being bored while the 3 others roll up characters all afternoon. So anyway, The lich's Soul Teeth are laying about and one is filled with Scott. Sam breaks it and we have Scott back. I get this silly notion that perhaps the souls of the dead are still around the bodies and place the empty teeth on the chests of the two still dead. Anth, feeling a little guilty, perhaps, of killing us all with a lich at 5th/6th level, gives a 10% chance. Philip rolls under 10%. Chris doesn't. Only one dead. One of the others had tried to roll for divine intervention earlier in the combat and failed. I tried that now to bring Chris' character back. I throw down the first percentile dice. It's a 0. That means I have a one chance in 10 to do something I've never done in a game before. Roll the infamous "double aughts!!" The tension grows. Anth laughs and someone says, "Jerry never makes these rolls." I toss down the other one. (pregnant pause) The dice seems to fly through the air in slow motion glinting with sunlight from the slats in the window. It hits and rolls across the table. Time stops just like when Kirk kisses the old woman who is a young woman in Insurrection. Then, as eternity ends, the dice comes up 0. I've rolled 00! Amazing! Anthonoy loses! The party led by.....me???? wins! Everyone jumps up from the table screaming and laughing raucously, especially me. No one can believe it. (Except Sam of course who just grins for a second and then returns to his usual taciturn self. Sometimes I think Sam should be a dwarf in real life. Yes I do know you'll get me later Sam. [grin]) Anyway, I got to feel what it was like to pull off the impossible, even if it was with Anthony's character, just once. I'll never forget it. My elation ebbs quickly as someone says "Hey what about experience" and I realize the moment is over. Someone says, "Hey we do that all the time." Ten minutes later, I'm back on the other side of the screen doing my usual. Sigh.....

Good Labor Day to all! Well I thought I'd take a break from my programming. Things go fast, then slow, them slower, then you find something else to do for a while. Kim is cleaning the garage (she does this sort of thing for fun - no joke) and of course that means I don't get off the hook. I got sucked into it as well for a while. Somehow what I'm doing pales in importance... Anyway, that all done I'm back on the computer. Figured I'd post before plunging back into the project. I hope this finds you all having fun and enjoying life. Good Day!

Sep 6, 1999 13:46

well just dropped in to say hi, while taking a break from writing lesson plans for next week. Arrggghhh, I truly was hoping this part ended with school, but NooooOOOOooo. my principal wants full lesson plans for the following week in her office at the beginning of the previous week. so that is 5-6 plans a day for five days each week AND she wants them to show where they address the curriculum goals. Now under normal circumstances this wouldnt be hard but As I teach lessons that address several curricular areas in each lesson I must adress all of them so that when I am teaching Social studies and doing a unit on mapping, that includes coordinates, gridding, longitude and lattitude, I also teach the sections about mathematics at the same time withion that lesson, so i must show the social studies and math Curriculum goals for that lesson. And since I tie all my lessons to literature in some form or another I must also include the language arts goals. And of course since we ate doing weather and tracking of hurricanes, on coordinate maps, in science I must include the science goals as well. Needless to say writing 30 of these a week is almost enough to turn me into an open the book and read lecturer type of teacher. ah well I have vented now. Don't feel much better but at least I have said this to someone and wont put my job in jeapardy by telling My principal what I really think about her lesson plan requirements. Ah well so long. i'm going back yo write 15 more.

Sep 6, 1999 21:57

Kent, you just described very well what I've meant when I've said I was busy lately. My plans for this 4 day week was 10 pages typed. It gets a little easier each week as my "arsenal" of lesson plan material I've saved to cut and paste with grows larger, but it's still a pain. Seems like they subdivide those requirements more each year. The killer this year is showing the PEPs. Personal Education Plans. Each kid that has one has "modifications" to his leaning due to a learning difficulty. I have 22 PEP kids with stated modifications. And the number of modifications total 33. I have to show in my plans how I'm adapting my lessons for these 22 kids and their 33 modifications. Grrrrr.....

:P I don't have to go to school until the 20th, ha-ha! *runs pip under an beech tree to avoid DMly retribution* (At least in the form of lightning. Gotta love those beech trees.) Well, I still have to study VB. Maybe by the end of the school year I can do some amateur programming for this site. Or set up a VB chat that a few people have access too. (with a backdoor too. Yeah... Oops. j/k) Hmm. Well, after reading Jerry's two stories, I'll submit a story of my own. I was DMing with a group that took their classes a little too seriously. Especially the person playing the Halfling thief. In 5 minutes of game time he had a whole table-full of Dwarves mad at him because he was pick-pocketing. With a % of 30, he still managed to roll a 00 on his first try. The Dwarf he was trying to pick-pocket, a level 3/4 Fighter/Thief, picked him up by the neck and threatened to twist it if he ever tried anything like that again. The would-be pickpocket then joined two others of the party (none of which knew each other yet) and tried to pick their pockets, succeeding in getting all of 4 copper pieces. I managed to get the group in one common room (along witrh an NPC or two), and the Halfling thiefc woke up first. He tried to steal from a Drow Fighter/Thief (of good alignment), who woke up and was about to throttle him when another of the party, a Song Wizard, sang a lullaby which conked out the halfling while the drow resisted. Then things got kinda out of hand, and suffice it to say that the halfling was lucky, he didn't suffer. I am currently going to be in a PBEM based on the most famous story out of Dragonlance, and I'm playing Gilthanas. If anyone can give me a handle on his character without giving any of the story away (I've never actually read it), go ahead. :P they wouldn't let me be Tasslehoff.

I'm glad to be in the company of such dedicated teachers! It's folks like you that give me hope for our future. It's part of where the "Rubber Meets the Road". The other part is at home and we all know what that's like for a bunch of the kids. It would probably be better if they slept at school. As my circle of influence grows I will eventually have a voice in teacher's salaries at our private school. I will be lobbying to pay them what they're worth - or at least a bit closer to that level. Good Day!

For those of you griping about your teaching jobs, I will say, that I wish I had one. I have two teaching licenses, OR and WA and nobody will hire without babysitti...er... substitute experience in their particular school district. Anyhow, I had to get a regular job. As regular jobs go, it isn't bad. I get to telecommute.... I manage a database now. And the pay is MUCH better. Ho hum. Forget it... maybe this isn't so bad... I withdraw... partially... the complaint.

Jerry
Sep 8, 1999 13:08

This is from school. I'm sans computer for a few days. :) It's lunch time. :) Now, I'm planning on going to Gen Con next year with anyone from WF or elsewhere who wants to go and room together. I'd like to either stay at a hotel one or two blocks away and not have to rent a car, or to stay away where the hotels are normally prices and rent a car. :) If you're interested in rooming at Gen Con, let me know. I'll be glad to coordinate housing, etc. If we can get enough Woldians there, we can have a live session with our online characters and actually meet each other which I think would be alot of fun. So if you're interested in whatever, let me know. My usual plan is to take two personal business days, fly out Wed. night after school arriving there in Milwaukee about 11PM or so. Then play and party through Sunday flying back Sun late afternoon so I can go to work on Moncay. I miss Thurs and Fri. at work--the two business days I get a year. So again, if interested let me know.

Jerry
Sep 8, 1999 13:13

Also, November 20, that's a Sat. John Klinger of Game 1 fame and one of our Asst. DMs will be in the states. We're planning an AD&D reunion here for him in Wichita Falls that evening. Supper at a Sports Place, followed by an evening of AD&D with our online character mixed with the local characters. The module for the evening is the long awaited return of Gareth to his home in The Windbourne Hills. It may involve some of the other families of the players there as well. What's better for a reunion out of character than a reunion of the families of our characters. :) Anyway, that was said to say this. If anyone wants to road trip to Texas for that, (I'm not really expecting anyone to be able to do so, but offering anyway) you're welcome. There are plenty of homes for you to stay in here with me or the local players, and some nice hotels close by as well. :) Just let me know if you're interested in that.

Cameron
Sep 8, 1999 14:20

Well, umm, thanks to running start I'm going to a local community college. But once I get out of High School, I'll head over to the UW to take 3 more years to get a double major. I think you either wanted one or the other...

Chris Lindsay
Sep 8, 1999 17:00

Cameron, UW wouldn't be University of Washington would it.... if so, I'm in Oregon, love to have any Woldians by for a game when possible. Hey Jerry... as for the GenCon thing, I'm totally in. I'm planning on going, but hadn't made traveling plans yet. As a side note, I just submitted the paperwork to begin an offical RPGA club here in Portland. The name of the club is "Company of the Rose". If anyone has any helpful suggestions on how to jump start a club, let me know, either here, or by email. I already plan to stop by the local hobby shops with flyers and such.

Kent
Sep 8, 1999 18:32

Now Chris, I don't believe that either Jerry or I were whining about our jobs, I mean if we didn't love teaching, we wouldn't. After all there a lot of other jobs that pay a whole lot more. I know I just left one. BTW if you were to move to NC particularly in the Raliegh, Durham, Chapel Hill area you would basically have your choice of school/grade, not to mention it is a great place to live.

Chris Lindsay
Sep 8, 1999 21:44

I was just teasing Kent... I didn't really think that you were whining... that bad.. heh heh heh... just kidding. North Carolina huh? Interesting. Unfortunately, I seem to be firmly entrenched in my current locale. Thanks anyhow. Especially with putting together the new club... I find myself at its head, trying to figure out which one of my relatively manipulative players got me into this... I guess, I'm whining now... Oh well... I wouldn't do it if I didn't love it... I suppose ya'll feel the same about teaching. Don't take me too seriously, I certainly don't... It keeps me in perspective... Even though my players constantly berate me for some illusory ego problem.

Cameron
Sep 9, 1999 01:55

No, Chris, it's University of Whisperleaf. I'm really a Gnomish petitioner of Bytopia (also known as Twin Paradises). j/k. Well, maybe when I get a drivers license and car I'll drive down there *peer dad*. Sorry, mud conditioning. I doubt we could do anything like that unless some vacation came up, and it's not likely in the near future. Say, anyone interested in setting up a MUD based on Wold some time in the indefinite future when I can handle something like that? Maybe take ROM and really modify it, or maybe ROT, I've heard it's easier to add new parts. When I learn VB it would be a great way to test programming ability. Anyone who is a mud addict, present or former, and is interested, go ahead and email me or something. I haven't been getting much email lately. Don't you like my ADDesque postings? Thank you. *muffled hits upside head, with a background muttering 'I've got to stop doing this.*

Good for you Cameron. No need to dally around in school if you have the ability to knock it out fast. As far as a road trip to Wichita Falls, If you can talk you father and mother into it, we'd love to have you all down. You are all more than welcome to come in stay in our home located in Keller, TX (North of Fort Worth) awhile for a taste of Texas. That way it wouldn't be such a whirlwind trip. Kim, you out there? How about it? You, Jenny, and the kiddos come down. Love to have you anytime.

Kim
Sep 9, 1999 14:43

David, Jenny just called me and asked if I'd like to spend our birthdays in Great Britain. Seems we've been invited by Keston Institute to a meeting focused upon Christianity and religious freedom / oppression in Russia and the former Soviet Union for Nov. 12th - 14th. Would have a chance also to meet with some C.S. Lewis folks, visit the Kilns, stay at a Bed & Breakfast (near Isengard?), etc. Maybe head northward after that to visit some friends in Scotland. Hmmmm... can we afford it? We have one free round-trip ticket. Would certainly love it. On the other hand, Texas would be nice... Cameron could stay home and take care of the hamster. ;-)

I might consider GenCon, but for me, it's too early to consider. If I did come, though I might be able to supply a car, since Milwaulke is not an uncomfortable drive for me, from Pa. I did it before, when I was at the Naval Station up there, and when I went to the Battletech simulator up there. Will keep you posted. Probably wouldn't be until spring before I decide.

I took the computer home for awhile Sunday to do some backing up. The shop is going to help me do some cleaning up of the harddrive, extraneous files, etc. starting this afternoon. As soon as I know when I'll have the thing back after that, I'll let you know. Remember, in an emergency, I can be reached via email here at school. I can also be called. If you've kept the address lists I send out every once in a while, my phone number is there for such times. If you don't have one, contact your DM who should have one. Right now, I'm predicting that I'll be active and posting again Thurs. Eve., but don't depend on that. It may be sooner or later....I sure hope not later because I'm going through withdrawals. [grin] Kent, you surviving the hurricanes ok? Donna, how about a halloween theme in The Inn? That would be cool! Not that what you have planned isn't. "The Headless Bartender" "I want to suck your flaming gnomish" "The Grinning Maw"--where the Maw opening begins changing into an actual mouth. Guys and gals, don't ever give me time to plan and brainstorm. It's like dangerous and stuff. (Posted from school)

Even as I speak, Cameron is in hospital, undergoing an appendectomy. So ... the phone just rang, and the doctor said things went great. "He was quite cooperative, being so lean," his Physicianship allowed, pleased that he didn't have layers of extra tissue to wade through on his way to Cam's appendix. He'll be in recovery, and we'll go visit him in a few hours. Here's your chance to send a 'get well soon' greeting to the player of Pip over in the Southern Kingdom, Game 4.

Kent
Sep 13, 1999 23:03

well as for Making it thru hurricanes. well, while the coast got trashed we didnt get much more than 35 mph winds and 10 inches of rain. of course now yet another is threatening to come ashore. :>p You kow while living in Florida i don't remember being hit by so many storms. Ah well. School is going well I have ny first official observation tomorrow morning. Cameron i hope everything is well and that you dont have too much pain during recovery.

Kim
Sep 14, 1999 02:16

The family went to see Cameron. He is a pretty analytical guy, and was explaining various procedures and medical gizmos to us. He was experiencing some post-operative pain. [As is the custom in health care these days, they plan to bump him out the door tomorrow, about sixteen hours after the operation. They frame this in an, "Isn't this wonderful?" way. Well, yes and maybe.] He was in good spirits, just not feeling great. He asked us to pray with him, and we did. The nurse gave him a shot, and he began to drift off to sleep. There was a device there, called something like "Altima Plus." I mentioned that my appendix had been removed so long ago, they only had the "Altima Minus" back then. Just before he fell asleep, he smiled wanly, and politely asked me not to make him laugh. "Maybe in a couple days, Dad."

DEH
Sep 14, 1999 10:42

I hope all continues to go well for you Cameron. I also said a prayer for you. Kim, I'd go to Britain in a second. I think it sounds like a great opportunity for you. I intend to travel there some day for an extended trip - or maybe several. Don't know when yet. Probably years away. Hope all is well for everyone. Good Day!

Sep 14, 1999 22:33

Well it is official, Floyd is expected to send sustained winds of up to 110 mph to us as of midnight Wednesday, or is that Thursday? Any way I am sending out an email to all necessary peoples, informing them of the possiblity of not have any power for an indefiniote period of time and hence not being able to post...... Man I really am getting tired of these storms.

Todd
Sep 15, 1999 01:02

Kent, does that mean then, that you are the official 'Blow-hard' of the group?! :) ;)

Cameron
Sep 15, 1999 03:09

Hmm, I must not have been fully conscious, I don't remember asing you guys to pray. I'm back after my appendectomy, and I'll have the bandage off tomorrow or Thursday, wait, make that today or tomorrow now. However, I won't be playing water polo for about a month :P. Well, It's 12:03 in the morning atm, and my pain medication is sort of kicking in and helping me along to sleep. At least I didn't need much in the way of active neurons to make the other posts. Did you know that you can get high from dizziness? It's because dizziness is lack of blood to the brain, and highs are caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. I experienced that after trying to stand up just after they took some blood to do tests on. Just a question for any MDs or med students, I know that with appendicitus(sic?) you have an elevated white cell count, but does your body produce any extra antibodies? Something I had wanted to ask at the hospital, but kept on forgetting. I'm just rambling on here, with an oxygen-starved brain. I should probably stop now. Bye all, off to go to sleep and dream about first-edition terminology (which sounds better, devils and demons or baatezu and tana'ri?) -signed Oxygen-Starved

JK
Sep 15, 1999 08:53

I'm sort of fond of demons and devils. Baatezu is okay. I can leave tana'ri alone.... and Jerry, I want to suck your flaming gnomish? That doesn't sound too good.

DEH
Sep 15, 1999 10:47

Cameron, you didn't ask us to pray. I just did it. Hope all is well on the east coast today and tomorrow. I think we ought to pray for them - even if they didn't ask... :) Good Day!

Todd
Sep 15, 1999 19:26

In same ways, that's the nice thing about prayer. Is that you can support people with it, even if they don't want it. Because who knows, besides you and the creator? :)

Kent
Sep 15, 1999 19:43

Todd Hmm i don't know about blow-hard but I've always been told I was full of hot air. Ah well I have posted where I could at this point and will try to post in Windhorn before we get hit, but........ And we will be thankful for any and all prayers sent our way. We will take what ever help we can get. Thanks all and see you soon.

Cameron
Sep 16, 1999 02:00

:P JK, I was talking to my dad. He said in his post I asked him to pray for me, I think. If I did, I was drifting in and out of consciousness at the time, as I was most of the night actually. And you're right, that does sound sort of perverted. Like something new from Mt. Nevermind. *shudder* Gotta go now. Oh, and one more question, which sounds better, yugoloth or daemon? Another little 1st/2nd edition change.

DEH
Sep 16, 1999 10:37

Another neat thing about prayer is that Satan has no defense against it. He cannot prevent a prayer once made from being heard. Pretty cool if you ask me and a compelling reason to do it often. Pray for the folks in south Fort Worth. A man shot up a church there last night. We stopped our Wednesday night service and prayed for them then. But that's only the beginning of what they'll need. Good Day (with a stiff upper lip).

Kris
Sep 16, 1999 15:00

The Wrath of Floyd turned out to be a bunch of hot air, here. Power went out at 3am, and was turned back on at 11am. What an anti-climax. Just to put my two cents in, 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons (yes, they are dropping the 'Advanced' name) will call Baatezu and Tanar'ri Devils and Demons, respectively. But you still have one more year to argue over 1st and 2nd editions.

JK
Sep 16, 1999 16:32

Cameron, I caught that you were speaking to your dad. It was the everlovable DEH that did not. Additionally, I didn't know that Kim was your dad. Knew you were related but not how. And finally Daemon sounds better than Yugoloth. In fact I rather prefer Daemon to Demon. Though I can't abide magick.

JK
Sep 16, 1999 16:34

I'm in the process of chopping and archiving pages once again. I already did game 1. Make me a compelling argument as to why your game should be next, and I'll see what I can do.

Kent
Sep 16, 1999 16:44

Well Floyd proved to be not as bad as we feared, perhaps the prayers id the trick. any we too lost power but it was back on a 2pm Thursday afternoon. So no harm, no foul. JK, as for chopping Game two could use chopping around the end of the week when they have acquired what they need for the next step and proceed underwater. makes a good chopping point I think. Thanx

Cameron
Sep 16, 1999 18:51

Well, in AD&D, Daemons are seperate from Demons and Devils. Devils are LE, Demons are CE, and Daemons are NE, although in some cases they are TN. But I think Yugoloth sounds better, because each type, where it was hydrodaemon, it's now hydroloth. But Daemon does sound better than yugoloth. And sorry there, JK. I was sort of off in space... Hmm, they're losing the Advanced? Heh. O hope they bring back old Bard and Ranger spell charts and Bard progressions... Gotta love those Celts.

Jerry
Sep 17, 1999 13:26

Oops, JK, that wasn't my intention at all. I was thinking vampires at the time. Apologies all around. I'm glad everyone has lived through all the storms and operations. Remember two dates folks. If you want to road trip to Texas, we're having a reunion for John on Nov. 20th. I heard that 13th Warrior is very dark--literally. My friend nearly broke a leg trying to find his seat after getting up to get some popcorn and Milk Duds. ;) (BTW...how will I know when I take over the DM stint for The Red Wyrm Inn? Do I get "tagged" by whoever's running the MAW adventure or what?)

JK
Sep 20, 1999 18:50

It was dark. There was this scene when they were sitting around a fire talking and you couldn't see a thing. There was a discernable plot. It was destroying the bad guys and saving the village. Not exactly thought provoking but a plot nonetheless. Of course Antonio Banderas wasn't integral to the story in any way. Nor was the intrigue with old Hrothgar's son and the resulting duel. Not even Antonio's love interest had anything to do with it. So there was a lot of extra stuff, but there was still a plot.

The parallels between Beowulf and 13th Warrior were obvious, even if you hadn't read the book. You guys surprise me, disliking the plot of one of the oldest stories written.

Ted
Sep 21, 1999 17:34

Not to sound mean but just because it is an old story dose not make it a good one. Sorry. But please dont get me wrong. I liked the movie very much but a poet that can fight like that ...should have made him a warrior that would have been better....He had a great dog...he he..

JK
Sep 22, 1999 08:44

I didn't say that I didn't like it. Though Beowulf is quite a bit different and there is a certain beauty to the original verse: Tha waes theod-sceatha thriddan sithe, frecne fyr-draca faetha gemyndig raesda on thone rofan tha him rum ageald. See?

DEH
Sep 22, 1999 10:48

or for those less versed in old English: "Oh! Listen to the tales of Danish kings of days gone by...". :) Of course, it might be easier to use middle English - such as the Cantebury Tales: "Whan that April with his shores soote. The drought of March hath pierced to the roote. And bathed every veigne in switch liquer of which virtue engengred is the fleur....". (Might want to check the spelling. I haven't looked at it since 10th grade... Good Day!

Jerry
Sep 22, 1999 13:41

Donna, I'll check on the Maw thing tonight when I get home. I thought you were already up to bat. I'm behind in the games I'm not involved with right now. :( I started to get caught up on Game 3 last night. But I will find that out for you tonight. :)

Donna
Sep 22, 1999 14:37

Thanks, Jerry...my point had been, of course, that NObody let me know EXACTLY when I was supposed to take the reins...all you'd originally said to me was "small bills only"...er, ah, I MEAN..."sometime in September." heh heh heh. (I didn't bribe nobody. Really. I swear..!)

JK
Sep 22, 1999 15:13

You bribe him? I thought it worked the other way around.

Kris
Sep 23, 1999 20:54

I read Canterbury tales in Middle English and didn't like it, actually. Except for the Wife of Bath's tale, natch.

Jerry
Sep 23, 1999 23:37

Ok, Kris is running the Inn right now. Ask her, Donna, when she's going to be done.

JK
Sep 24, 1999 13:16

Well, I guess Game 2 gets archived next since no one but Kent seemed to care.

Kim
Sep 26, 1999 03:06

JK - If you want to archive Wold 2, could you have the new one start from where Borbo shows up again?

Kim
Sep 26, 1999 03:09

Kris - how can you leave Game 5? We LIKE Skippy. If Legs were a witness to what was going on, he'd attack that whip-wielding priest, and da.., uh, er, darn the consequences. We'll miss your contributions there!

Todd
Sep 26, 1999 22:18

Though we'll miss having Skippy around (whatever happens), I think it will be another twist in the story line, that probably coudn't have been supplied by Jerry in such a fashion. I sometimes have more fun for where the story goes, by the players invention, than by the DM's original concept. Of course, I know that this makes the DM try to cover all bases, as to what the players are going to do, and then we still discover new ground to take the adventure to! :) ;)

DEH
Sep 27, 1999 10:55

Good morning. Life is good in the Metroplex. Hope it's good where you are. Have a great week!

Kris
Sep 27, 1999 20:26

Well, with the Inn, I'm running 3 online games, along with playing in several games. There's continuing possibilities of me getting a job, and I just feel like my brain will explode soon!:)

Kent
Sep 27, 1999 21:54

The question is will Wynd gather enough courage to let loose with a few well aimed sling stones? If so who will she be aiming for? The Priests?, Skippy's parents? Or Skippy herself? or will she lose her nerve and just sit up there and cry for awhile? Kris, we will miss your play but I do understand your dilemma.

Kim
Sep 28, 1999 11:19

Let us all observe a moment of silence for Skippy, the bright, the beautiful, the spunky, the holder and liberator of the honeybee.

Cameron McCoy
Sep 28, 1999 16:57

*observes moment of silence* Hmm. It's been nearly 2 hours since that post. Oh, well. Too bad Skippy was dropped. Will be interesting to see who replaces her tho'.

Todd
Sep 28, 1999 22:34

JK. I seem to be having a diplay problem on the screens. When looking at the site thru netscape 4.61 via a cable modem, I'm getting the read turns/enter turns/loot&booty line chopped in about 2/3rds of what it should be.

JKlinger
Sep 29, 1999 06:40

If you mean the height of that little bar is chopped, it's a known Netscape bug. It usually only appears when you resize the window while a page with frames is displayed.

Kris
Sep 29, 1999 09:33

Whose character is Rogar? He's been DM-run for the last 3 weeks or so. His party is dividing magic items, so he really ought to see what's going on in the Inn.

Todd
Sep 29, 1999 20:57

Okay JK. Though this is happening everytime I open a new netscape window. (though resizing it once in the last couple of days may have started the mess).

JK
Sep 30, 1999 00:13

JKlinger and JK aren't one in the same. Though we both do the web site work. As for Rogar, he's my char. It's been a lot longer than 3 weeks since I've played him. More like 2 months. Come to think of it, wasn't DAHill the DM when I took my hiatus. I'm shocked that Rogar's been pulled along through the story by more than 1 dm. I assumed he was sitting around drinking somewhere. I'll have to look in and see what the stubborn guy has been up to.

Cameron
Oct 1, 1999 21:20

Dang, we lost a lot of posts. That's probably very annoying to most of you. Me too. *sigh*

Jerry
Oct 1, 1999 21:54

"Cameron, what do you mean we lost posts?"...not that I'll be here to get your answer unless you log on tonight. I leave in the morning. Should be back by next Sat. night at the latest. :) JK and John are in charge until my return.

JK
Oct 2, 1999 01:42

Yeah, what do you mean we lost posts?

JrK
Oct 2, 1999 04:25

Yeah, what do you mean we lost posts? :)

Kim
Oct 3, 1999 00:40

I think that Cameron means that in the Red Wyrm Inn, we lost about, I don't know, maybe five to eight posts. After Holly said she wanted "a jem," Sweetie Pie asked, "What kind of jam would you like?" There were some other posts following. The replacement page ended with Holly's statement of preference, missing several following posts.

JK
Oct 3, 1999 09:55

Well, I didn't do it.

Kim
Oct 4, 1999 03:18

Yeah, it's probably Cameron's fault. Or, since he's not here to defend himself, we can say that Jerry did it! Yeah, that's the ticket. ;) I wouldn't worry about it too much, guys. It's not Faulkner or Shakespeare.

Cameron
Oct 4, 1999 16:56

First of all, I don't hack into places I like, only places like AOL and... Oops. All kidding aside, it doesn't matter much. A few posts from both the Inn and here disappeared, and that's it. And I wasn't crashing AOL users at the time, thank you very much.

Kris
Oct 4, 1999 18:39

Did anyone else get a wierd page when they connected to the Wold this weekend, saying nothing but 'Strangling' or 'Choking' or something? It was SO wierd...but I didn't want to bother our Esteemed Jericko about it.

JK
Oct 5, 1999 10:40

No. You probably have some sort of dreaded internet virus that's going to destroy your computer and mail your credit card numbers to every thief in America. Have a nice day! :)

DEH
Oct 5, 1999 11:09

So THAT was all those numbers I got via email... cool! And now for something completely different: To all those DMs who would change my character in the RWI. Disgruntle is NOT a half-ogre!!!! Please email me offline if you want more info... :). And finally, just for the record. He is "The Jericho", not "The Jericko". Careful with that as he controls your experience point accrual and character destiny... :)))) Good Day to all!

Kris
Oct 5, 1999 16:28

But he spells his name in all kinds of different ways! Gericko, Jericho, Jericko, it's all so confusing! Is it really creating a new faith, or is it just Jericho under a new name?

Kim
Oct 5, 1999 19:08

Good point, David. Disgruntle is just so big that people *think* he must be a half-ogre. For further NPC guidelines for Red Wyrm DMs: Sweetie Pie (the Red Wyrm Inn waitress) does not tend to suggest high-potentcy drinks to the clients, but rather when possible leaves that to Vasha (the Minotaur bartender). She prefers to focus on the food, juices, tea, milk and, though preferring to defer to Vasha even on this, will suggest some of the lighter alcoholic drinks, e.g., ales, wines. The heavier stuff she knows some customers like, but she doesn't always enjoy the aftermath, thus will avoid mentioning the popular 'concoctions.' Think of her as someone who would prefer to work in a family restaurant, but who is surprised to find how interesting it is to serve adventurers. But oh how she likes to tell those she serves about tingly good food! [And no, I'm not entirely sure what 'tingly' means here.] And she is more than willing to do what it takes to meet the culinary and other tavern-related desires of the Inn's guests (like running out to find Dahlia some pipes and good tobacco from the Wharf down the street). She's a nice girl. What's she doing in a place like this? :^)

Jerry
Oct 6, 1999 05:23

Kim, please mail what you have on the NPC's of the Inn to Kris and Donna and Cameron as Kris is the current DM there and the others come up next in that order. For those of you who don't know, Kim is keeping up with the NPC's there and who invented them. He is also working on a map and legend of the place as he gets time.

Jerry
Oct 6, 1999 05:30

Now as to the spelling of The Jericho. Well, that's it. The NPC creator, The Jericho, is spelled that way. Sometimes I like to pretend that I'm he, playing that character. My online handle is Gericko primarily, although other ones are TheJericho, TheJerich1, and TheJerich2. The Games page is stored under TheJerich1. This was a nickname of mine back in college. My Sophmore year, I fell twice and ripped my ankle up pretty good. Once in an ice fight in the dorm and once when a fat lady fell on me while climbing down the Statue of Liberty while it was under reconstruction. Really! My best friend at that time, Kathy, made the comment that you walk around Jerry 7 times and he falls down, just like Jericho. The nickname stuck. Somehow, it worked it's way into the game. I don't remember exactly how. Perhaps one of the Game 1 veterans can remember back that far. I do remember that it was suggested to me though. No way would I be so arrogant as to make myself the creator of the gods. So it's a character that just happens to have my nickname.....I think. Sorta like the creator in the Thomas Covenant series, I get confused about it all regularly.

Jerry
Oct 6, 1999 05:33

Ok, folks, I have some time this week and next so will be furiously working on my lists. So rather than look back into the archives, I'll ask again. If anyone would like some Woldian work or projects to do for fun, experience, or both, let me know by email. I'll send you a list of possible areas/projects/etc. for you to choose from.

DEH
Oct 6, 1999 11:18

Uh, guys. On game 3, if you roll UNDER your Wisdom you make the roll. Ingrige rolled a 20 and is therefore paralyzed. The others rolled low which probably means they made it. Just thought you'd like to know.... Jerry, I can't remember how "The Jericho" came about. It has been that way for as long as I have been playing with you. And I think I hold the title of longest active player - barring a brief intermission of a few years absent from W.F. You might need to ask Brent W. or Kieth E. about that. They may remember. Dennis H. lives in Carrolton down here. I could call him if you want.

DEH
Oct 6, 1999 11:41

DOH! Sorry about that game 3 players. I misread the DM post. I saw Wisdom and not save vs. P. Everyone made the right post - except me of course. Here's to egg on my face!

Kim
Oct 6, 1999 11:50

David - On a save vs. paralyzation, you need a roll greater than or equal to your saving throw. With the -2 penalty, you have to roll at least two OVER your saving throw (with any other character-specific adjustments). Although, under the circumstances, it would be cool if it were as you suggest, that would be counter to the official AD&D saving throw conventions. N'est ce pas?

Kim
Oct 6, 1999 11:51

DOH! I started writing the post above this one before DEH's last post showed up on the board. Sorry, David.

DEH
Oct 6, 1999 14:07

No problem Kim. I was the one with the mind flatulation - or is that brain fart...
